What’s Changing in 2026
IRS Filing Season Start Unclear: While there were reports that the 2026 filing season might start around Presidents' Day (Feb. 16, 2026), the IRS has not confirmed this. An official start date is expected in January 2026.
1099 Reporting Thresholds: Under the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act", starting in 2026:
A $1% excise tax applies to certain electronic transfers to foreign countries.
The thresholds for Form 1099-K reporting remain the same (i.e., $20,000 and 200 transactions).
The threshold for Forms 1099-MISC and 1099-NEC increases from $600 to $2,000, adjusted for inflation in future years.
These changes mean more small-business owners and gig workers may not receive certain 1099s—so keep careful records!
